IIT Kharagpur to Train Rural Youth in Healthcare with New Skill School From November 2025

August 17, 2025

Get ready for a healthcare revolution, as IIT Kharagpur sets up the School for Skills: Healthcare & Technology right on its campus in West Bengal! This new school plans to teach rural and semi-urban youth the tricks of the healthcare trade through short-term certificate courses, with the very first batch kicking off in November 2025. According to an official statement from IIT Kharagpur, "The facility will initially accommodate 150 students annually, offering short-term certificate courses aligned with the National Skills Qualifications Framework (NSQF), including general duty assistant, emergency medical technician – basic, and phlebotomist." This means fresh faces will soon be ready to help in vital healthcare roles. The courses are tied up with the National Skill Development Corporation (NSDC), part of the union ministry of skill development and entrepreneurship. The certificates after the training will come from the healthcare sector skill council, adding official weight to the skills learned here. What's more exciting? The newly trained workforce will jump into action at the Syama Prasad Mukherjee Super-Speciality Hospital at IIT Kharagpur and other healthcare spots nearby, giving a much-needed boost to patient care. IIT Kharagpur’s director Suman Chakraborty shared his vision, saying, "The School for Skills: Healthcare and Technology at IIT Kharagpur is more than a training hub. It is a catalyst for change. By combining skill development with cutting-edge technology, we aim to build a healthcare workforce that can serve the last mile, transform rural healthcare delivery, and contribute to the nation’s vision of inclusive growth." His words light the path to a better, healthier India. So, this isn't just a school; it’s a vibrant dream turning into reality — bringing healthcare skills right to where they are needed most, and empowering young minds with a future filled with opportunities and care!
