Today, October 7, 2025, schools and colleges are celebrating a special holiday across many states! In Delhi and Uttar Pradesh, the big reason is Maharishi Valmiki Jayanti – the birth anniversary of the great sage who wrote the epic Ramayana. This day is a gazetted holiday in many states and union territories. In Delhi, the Directorate of Education (DoE) had already marked this day as a holiday in their calendar. So, all government schools and offices are shut tight today. Uttar Pradesh is also joining the celebration! Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath announced a full public holiday. He said, “A public holiday will be observed in the state on October 7, the birth anniversary of Lord Valmiki. An uninterrupted recitation of the Ramayana will be organised in every temple.” Isn’t that amazing? But why all this fanfare for Valmiki Jayanti? Maharishi Valmiki is called the first poet in Sanskrit literature. He wrote the famous Ramayana, one of India’s greatest epics. It is believed he was born to Varuna, who was the ninth son of Maharishi Kashyap and Aditi, and his wife Charshani. The day comes alive with colorful processions, Ramayana readings, and cultural programs in temples and schools across many states. While the north is busy with celebrations, Jammu and Kashmir have a different story. Schools there are closed today and yesterday (October 6 and 7). But this is not because of any festival – it’s the heavy rainfall causing problems. The local administration made sure all government and private schools stay closed to keep students safe. People have been warned to be careful as the bad weather continues to disrupt daily life. You can check the official notice for more details. In Tamil Nadu, schools have just reopened after the quarterly exams. But don’t think the monsoon is giving them a break! The state government has asked schools to take extra care of kids during this rainy season. So, with festive holidays in some places and weather troubles in others, students all over India are getting an extended pause from their routine this week. Whether it’s soaking in the spiritual Ramayana or staying safe from the rain – this week has a bit of everything!
