Kerala Eyes Bright Business Sparks with Japan Amid Global Tariff Storm at Japan Mela

October 16, 2025

The third Japan Mela lit up Kochi with hope and fresh ideas on Thursday! Organized by INJACK, this vibrant event brought together top minds ready to turn global trade troubles into winning chances for Kerala. Additional Chief Secretary K R Jyothilal fired the opening shot with his keynote speech saying, “Every disruption carries an opportunity within it, and we should capitalise on it.” The recent tariff tangle caused by Trump’s policies has shaken businesses worldwide. But Kerala, with its rich export basket of marine products, spices and textiles, can shine by finding new buyers in Japan. What really stole the show was the talk on lithium titanate oxide batteries, or LTO batteries. Jyothilal highlighted Kerala’s treasure trove of rare earth minerals perfect for these batteries—sometimes called the future's energy stars. The state’s plan to use LTO batteries in buses promises cheaper, cleaner rides. Adding to the buzz, INJACK President Viju Jacob shared, “The Japan Mela would explore opportunities in tourism, wellness, maritime, infrastructure, spices and allied products, AI, robotics, IT, start-ups and more.” He praised the shared tech dreams of India and Japan, both aiming at a greener, smarter world. Vice President of INJACK, Dr K Ellangovan, noted the rising quality of tourists visiting Kerala and saw many ways to connect Japan’s strengths with Kerala’s charms. Honored guests like Consul General of Japan Takahashi Muneo and Japan Economic Council Chairman Choemon Tanabe joined the stage, adding diplomatic sparkle. The event sizzled with panel discussions on hot topics including tourism and wellness, the booming IT and AI sectors in Japan, maritime infrastructure, and Kerala’s famed spices and related products. With global trade winds shifting, Kerala seems ready to surf the wave with Japan — embracing technology, exploring new markets, and hopping onto greener, smarter paths. This Japan Mela certainly was more than a meeting; it was a launchpad for partnerships packed with promise!
