RAIPUR: The 14th foundation day of ICAR–National Institute of Biotic Stress Management (NIBSM), Raipur, was buzzing with fresh ideas and energy! Experts gathered to talk about big ways to keep farms healthy by managing stress on crops. They championed the One Health approach—a clever mix of human, animal, and plant health—to solve farming problems. Keynote speaker Dr Mangla Rai, the man who dreamed up NIBSM, shared his powerful vision. He said, "An integrated approach linking biotic and abiotic stress management is vital for long-term agricultural resilience." What does this mean? It’s about handling all kinds of plant challenges, like pests and weather, together. Dr Rai also urged the power of biotechnology, calling for "innovative, eco-friendly, and farmer-centric solutions to mitigate crop stress and enhance productivity." Dr T P Rajendran, a veteran plant protection expert, highlighted the need to grow strong research ties to fight new threats to plants. Meanwhile, Dr Piyush Pandey, VC of Amity University, Chhattisgarh, reminded everyone that science should help farmers directly by turning research into real farming tools. Dr J Kumar, former joint director at ICAR–NIBSM, praised the institute’s scientific strides in crop stress and called for ongoing inventive teamwork across fields. The current director, Dr P K Rai, proudly outlined the institute's big wins and current projects. He spoke about their dedication to educating and building skilled experts who will shape the future of agriculture. In a heartwarming moment, two hardworking farmers received special honors for their sustainable farming efforts. Plus, star employees of the institute were celebrated for their dedication. The fest also saw the launch of new books and papers, including one on antimicrobial resistance, vital for protecting both plants and people. About 100 farmers joined a lively chat with scientists, sharing worries and tips about handling crop stress. Dr Anil Dixit, joint director, kicked off the event with a warm welcome and smoothly kept the celebrations on track. This day at ICAR-NIBSM was not just a celebration but a spark lighting the way for stronger, smarter farming in India!
