Big news from India’s payment world! Razorpay announced on October 9 that it has teamed up with the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) and tech giant OpenAI to launch a new AI-powered payment service called Agentic Payments. This exciting service is already running in private beta. So, what is Agentic Payments all about? It’s a cool new way for ChatGPT users in India to find and buy products with just a simple chat. No more jumping between grocery apps or bothering with UPI PINs and OTPs. Razorpay promises, "Imagine this: You tell your AI assistant, ‘Order my usual groceries,’ and it simply does it.” Just like magic! How does it work? Agentic Payments uses NPCI’s innovative UPI Circle and UPI Reserve Pay features. UPI Circle lets users let someone else pay from their UPI account, while UPI Reserve Pay sets credit limits so spending is controlled. This means you can give your AI assistant permission to shop and pay for you, safely and with spending limits you decide. "From groceries to mobile recharges, the possibilities are vast," said Razorpay in their blog post. This private beta is just the beginning. Razorpay, NPCI, and OpenAI are working together to take this from a test-run to a full launch soon. In the background, big names like Visa are also jumping on the bandwagon. Visa plans to open up AI tools so developers can build smart payment agents, keeping security tight while making payments super easy. Visa's Senior VP Rubail Birwadker explained, "The goal is to extend the trust of the Visa brand into the future of agentic commerce." With smart AI assistants like Agentic Payments, the way Indians shop and pay online could become fun, fast, and friction-free. Stay tuned as this tech magic grows!
