SRINAGAR: A sad tale from the snow-covered mountains of South Kashmir! The body of one of two soldiers missing since October 6 was found on Thursday in the Ahlan Gadol forest of Kokernag, Anantnag district. Officials said the soldier likely died in a weather-related accident while on patrol in this high-altitude, snowy region. His rucksack and service weapon were discovered beside him, untouched. Authorities are yet to reveal his identity as investigations continue. The Army’s Srinagar-based 15 Corps shared grim details on X: "On the intervening night of 6/7 October, an operational team on Kishtwar range confronted a severe snow storm and white out conditions in the mountains of South Kashmir. Since then, two soldiers have gone out of communication." Officials believe the soldiers lost their way amid worsening weather in the mountain range stretching from Anantnag to Kishtwar in Jammu region. Early reports suggest an avalanche or a sudden snowstorm caused the deadly incident. Helicopters are flying to help the ground teams in their search, but deep snow and low visibility have slowed down rescue efforts. Meanwhile, Kashmir valley’s temperature has dropped by nearly 10 degrees Celsius since Monday, with fresh snowfall covering the high reaches. The rescue mission continues with fingers crossed, hoping to bring back the second soldier safe and sound.
