NEW DELHI: Get ready for some sizzling news from the world of tech and business! MediaTek, the Taiwanese chip titan and the second largest chip provider for smartphones worldwide, is gearing up to start making its chips right here in India. This is huge because MediaTek designs chips for top brands like Xiaomi, Samsung, Oppo, and Vivo. Anku Jain, MediaTek's India Managing Director, shared his excitement with TOI, saying, "If consumption is in India and manufacturing is in India, that's good for us. It (local manufacturing of chips) may also happen. It makes business sense, certainly it's a good thing to do. Things can be done to Make in India." So why now? India is booming with electronics and automobile manufacturing. On top of that, the government is backing big plans to build semiconductor facilities in the country. This means soon, chips made for both Indian and global brands will roll out from local factories. MediaTek is known as a fabless semiconductor company – it designs the chip brains but outsources the actual chip creation to fab foundries like Taiwan’s TSMC. Currently, some chip production is also done through Intel Foundry Services and GlobalFoundries. But with the government’s massive $10-billion incentive package encouraging local chip production, change is in the air! Around 10 large semiconductor projects are already cooking in India. With MediaTek ready to jump onto the Indian manufacturing bandwagon, the country's dream of owning a chunk of the global semiconductor pie just got tastier. Keep an eye out, India might soon become a hotspot for the tiny chips that power our world!
