Nagaland Crime Alert: SLL Crimes Skyrocket by 91% in Three Years, IPC Crimes Steady

October 1, 2025

Hold on tight! Nagaland’s crime scene has a spicy twist according to the latest Crime in India 2023 report by the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB). While crimes under the Indian Penal Code (IPC) stayed quite steady, it’s the Special and Local Laws (SLL) crimes that have hit the roof. From 2021 to 2023, total SLL crime cases soared from 445 to a whopping 849 – that’s a 91% jump! These mostly involve excise, narcotics, and local administrative rules. Meanwhile, IPC crimes dipped and rose just slightly – 1,033 in 2021, 1,008 in 2022, and 1,050 in 2023. Nagaland’s crime rate under IPC is 47.0 per lakh population, which is way below the national average of 270.3. Even with murder cases rising from 14 to 19 over three years, the overall public safety feels pretty calm. Crimes against public peace like rioting were at 138 cases in 2023. Worry not, ladies and kids are largely safe here. Only 3 rape cases and 1 trafficking case appeared in 2023, with a super low crime rate against women of 0.3 per lakh – India’s national rate is 66.2! Crimes against children were also minimal, with none reported under the POCSO Act in three years. Technology and money moves are getting tricky though. Cybercrime cases doubled from 2 in 2021 to 6 in 2023, while economic crimes zoomed from 15 to 27. Property crimes like theft and burglary are a big chunk of IPC cases, rising steadily over the years. Good news! Offences involving arms and explosives are falling – only 1 case each in 2023. And some crime categories like fake currency and crimes against senior citizens reported zero cases. With 1,899 cases in 2023 and a population of 22.4 lakh, Nagaland has the lowest crime count in the Northeast. Nearby states like Assam and Manipur have way higher numbers. But watch out – Nagaland’s overall crime rate is 84.9 per lakh, still lower than other Northeastern states. So, Nagaland stands as a mostly peaceful place with flashing hotspots in SLL crimes and cyber offences. The NCRB report has given us a colorful glimpse into where trouble is brewing and where calm prevails in this beautiful state.
