BHOPAL: A terrible honour killing case has shaken Morena district in Madhya Pradesh. A 17-year-old Class 12 girl was tragically shot dead by her own father because she wanted to marry someone from a different caste. The accused then did something chilling – he wrapped her body in a tarpaulin bag, tied stones to weigh it down, and threw it into the nearby river. The story came to light after a helpful neighbor alerted the police. The girl was missing since September 23, the night when the neighbor heard gunshots and screams coming from the house. Alarmed by this, the neighbor reported the matter to the Civil Lines police station on Saturday. At first, the accused gave strange, unclear answers to the police and even tried to mislead them. But when taken into custody, the father confessed. The police revealed that the girl had a heated argument with her father because she wanted to marry outside their caste. The enraged father shot her in front of her younger sister! After killing her, the father planned to hide the crime. He packed her body in a tarpaulin sack, tied it with a heavy stone, and dumped it into the river near their ancestral village of Bhagwan Singh Ka Pura. The State Disaster Response Force started a search operation which paused on Saturday night but resumed the next morning. Around 10 a.m. on Sunday, rescuers found the girl’s body floating in the river. The police sent her body for a postmortem to confirm the exact cause of death. In a jaw-dropping statement to the media while being taken to court, the father said, “my daughter shot herself dead and I cremated her by the Kwari river.” But the police believe it’s a lie. A senior police officer said, “Despite persuasion, she insisted on marrying him. Enraged, her father shot her dead.” This tragic case is a harsh reminder of the challenges some young lovers face when caste and family beliefs clash. The police continue to investigate and seek justice for the young girl whose life was cut short in such a cruel way.
