Opposition Cheers Supreme Court Win, Calls It a Huge Setback for Government’s Controversial Law

September 16, 2025

Big news from the Supreme Court! The Opposition parties are all smiles, calling the SC’s latest decision a major relief and a huge win for those who criticized the government’s law. Congress chief Mallikarjun Kharge said, "The SC decision reaffirmed its resolve to protect the rights of minorities, a cause for which the Opposition stood united against the Modi government." But Kharge also hit out hard, saying the BJP is using this law "to inflame communal passions." Not holding back, Congress’s KC Venugopal exclaimed, "This is a vindication of our stand that this law is blatantly unconstitutional and designed to target a particular community... This verdict is yet another tight slap on the face of this government that is solely focused on destroying the Constitution." He added a sharp warning: "If they had paid heed to the Opposition's advice in Parliament, they would have been spared this embarrassment. They should... repeal the law immediately." Congress spokesman Jairam Ramesh wasn’t quiet either. He called the SC order "important" and explained that the law’s intent was "to keep the voter base inflamed and create an administrative structure to indulge those seeking to foment religious disputes." Congress MP Syed Naseer Hussain praised the court too, saying the Supreme Court "has reaffirmed the constitutional safeguards that protect minority rights and struck a balance between reform and representation." From a leftist corner, CPI general secretary D Raja, who was one of the petitioners, welcomed the verdict and said, "The Supreme Court has raised several pertinent issues that need to be addressed. Unless those issues are addressed and a solution is found, how can legislation be implemented?" He stressed, "Now, it is for the government to respond, and Parliament will have to address the questions raised by the Supreme Court. The government cannot put this legislation into implementation unless the issues raised by the SC are addressed." So, the Supreme Court has delivered a strong message. The Opposition sees this as a major jolt to the government’s plans and a clear win for protecting the rights of minorities. Will the government listen? The ball is now in their court!
