In a big event in New Delhi on September 15, 2025, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman spoke about the exciting world of Artificial Intelligence (AI). She said India wants to grow with AI, but rules must support innovation without killing it. At the launch of the report 'AI for Viksit Bharat: The Opportunity for Accelerated Economic Growth', she stressed, "We do not want regulation that literally wipe out technology itself. We want regulations because we want a responsible application." Sitharaman pointed out that AI moves fast and can bring big challenges. "AI is a rapidly progressing, real-time, dynamic thing, and therefore all of us will have to be conscious that we don't sit back on the ethic as AI can also have its challenges," she said. She also mentioned risks like job losses and misuse of AI that could harm society. The report by NITI Aayog shows a two-faced picture. On one hand, AI will create many new jobs. On the other, it will replace many old jobs, especially in clerical and routine work. India’s big task is training workers in digital and AI skills so they can grab the new chances. At the same time, those who lose jobs must get new opportunities through reskilling and moving into growing parts of the economy. The report highlights that for India to truly benefit from AI, it must boost both productivity and market growth. This means making sure people buy more and India takes a strong role in global markets. To do this, India’s industry and trade rules will need to evolve fast, especially with global rules shifting quickly. For example, the European Union is introducing strict rules called the AI Act, focusing on high-risk AI systems. Also, new trade measures like carbon border taxes will affect how easy it is to sell products worldwide. Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman’s message is clear: India must be ready with smart rules and skilled people to grab the AI opportunity without losing its balance. The road to a 'Viksit Bharat' or developed India, rides on careful steps with AI technology, making growth fast and fair for all.
