Brace yourselves as the monsoon fury strikes hard! The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has sounded red alerts in many parts of India including Jammu & Kashmir, Punjab, Himachal Pradesh, Haryana, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, and Odisha. This means very heavy rains are hitting these regions with dangers like flash floods, landslides, and waterlogging. Specifically in Jammu & Kashmir, districts such as Poonch, Mirpur, Rajouri, Reasi, Jammu, Ramban, Udhampur, Samba, Kathua, Doda, and Kishtwar are under red alert. Punjab’s hot spots include Kapurthala, Jalandhar, Nawashahr, Rupnagar, Moga, Ludhiana, Barnala, and Sangrur. Himachal Pradesh is not spared either, with Mandi, Una, Bilaspur, Sirmaur, and Solan on the alert list. Haryana’s Yamuna Nagar, Ambala, Kurukshetra, Panchkula, and SAS Nagar also face heavy rain warnings. From late Tuesday night to early Wednesday morning, heavy rainfall drenched Chhattisgarh, while parts of Delhi, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, West Bengal, Odisha, Maharashtra, Karnataka, Uttarakhand, Madhya Pradesh, and the Andaman Islands got moderate showers. The Punjab government reacted quickly by extending the closure of all schools, colleges, and universities till September 7 due to severe flooding. Jammu Division's schools will also remain shut on September 3 to keep children safe. Congress leader Rahul Gandhi has urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to announce an immediate special relief package for Punjab, Jammu & Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, and Uttarakhand. He said, “Modiji, floods have caused massive destruction in Punjab. The situation in Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand is also extremely worrying.” Adding, “In such difficult times, your attention and the active help of the central government is extremely necessary. Thousands of families are struggling to save their homes, lives and loved ones.” Flight operations to Leh have been hit due to bad weather, Delhi Airport confirmed, urging passengers to check with airlines. Meanwhile, Himachal Pradesh faced landslides too, with 15 houses evacuated in Mandi’s Ner Gharwarsra Panchayat as a safety measure. The local administration is on high alert everywhere, monitoring the situation closely. Delhi’s Minister Parvesh Verma inspected the ITO Barrage after the Yamuna river water level crossed danger marks—a scary sign indeed! With the rains expected to continue over the next few hours, all eyes are on the government and rescue teams battling nature's fury. Stay safe and stay tuned for updates!
