Maruti Suzuki’s Bold Plan: Back to 50% Market Share with SUV Powerhouses Like Victoris

September 4, 2025

Maruti Suzuki, India's biggest carmaker, is revving up to grab half of the domestic market share by the end of this decade! How? By betting big on the sizzling SUV segment that now makes up 55% of all car sales in India. Managing Director Hisashi Takeuchi says SUVs are the real deal to boost volumes and win over more buyers. Maruti Suzuki has long been known for its small cars and will keep refreshing that lineup to stay on top. But the new magic lies in SUVs. The company’s smart move began with entry-level SUV stars like the Brezza and Fronx. These models helped them grab a strong lead in the entry-SUV scene. Thanks to this, their SUV sales share jumped nearly three times from 8.9% in 2020-21 to almost 28% in 2024-25. Now, the spotlight is on the fresh Victoris model. This midsize SUV, delivering from Navratri onwards, is expected to tap into India’s hot demand for midsize SUVs, which sell about 9 lakh units every year. Victoris isn’t just for India; Maruti plans to export it to a whopping 100 countries worldwide. The company has pumped Rs 1,240 crore into making this model and will build it at their new plant in Kharkhoda, Haryana. Takeuchi didn’t give exact sales targets but promised “big volumes.” The Victoris will reach customers through Maruti’s wide Arena network. Plus, they’re not stopping here: two new SUV launches are lined up this year – the Victoris and the e Vitara, which is their first battery electric vehicle. Maruti is also eyeing the premium SUV market. With India being home to the world’s largest youth population, Takeuchi believes they have a huge opportunity to attract today’s and tomorrow’s customers. In his words, “Being a market leader, it is important for us to cater to all set of customers.” The SUV wave is roaring, and Maruti Suzuki looks ready to surf it with style, power, and a zippy lineup that could bring back their magic 50% market share dream!
