The festive mood of Brooklyn’s West Indian American Day Parade was suddenly shattered on Monday evening, September 1, 2025, when six people were shot, leaving the crowd in fear and chaos. The parade, known for its vibrant celebration and thousands of revelers, took a bloody turn as gunshots rang out near the end of the event. The parade began bright and early at 11 a.m. on Utica Avenue near Lincoln Terrace Park. Participants marched westward toward the Brooklyn Museum on a route stretching about two miles. With a heavy NYPD security presence in place, everything seemed peaceful at first. But the calm did not last. The gunfire erupted around 5:35 p.m. on Eastern Parkway, a key spot along the parade. Police and sources told the New York Post that a man in his 20s was shot in the leg while a woman in her 40s was grazed by a bullet. Both were quickly taken to Kings County Hospital Center and are in stable condition. The violence did not stop there. About 40 minutes later, at around 6:15 p.m., a 40-year-old woman and a 53-year-old man were shot on Nostrand Avenue near Sterling Place. And then at about 6:30 p.m., two more people were hit along Eastern Parkway: a 26-year-old woman shot in the shoulder and a 21-year-old man shot once in the chest. Despite the NYPD’s efforts and the presence of officers along the route, at least five shell casings were found at the scene, confirming multiple rounds were fired. This shocking incident cast a dark shadow over the annual parade, which usually is a joyous occasion celebrating culture and community pride. The reasons behind the shootings are still unclear, and the police are investigating the multiple firing incidents that spread panic among the thousands gathered to celebrate. As the dust settles, questions remain on how such violence erupted despite tight security on the parade’s busiest day. The West Indian American Day Parade, a beloved tradition in Brooklyn, ended with heartbreak this year, reminding everyone how quickly festivities can turn tragic.
