Srinagar’s 70-Year-Old Playground at Risk! Police Building Sparks Big Youth Uproar

Something fishy is brewing in Srinagar! Just one day after the Prime Minister praised Kashmiri youth for shining in sports, local leaders are up in arms. Why? Because the 70-year-old playground at Baghat Barzulla, a cherished sports spot for generations, is being taken away to build a Police Martyrs’ building. PDP leader and Pulwama MLA Waheed-ur-Rehman Parra shared his shock, saying, “A day after Prime Minister praised Kashmiri youth for their role in sports, Srinagar’s 70-year-old playground at Baghat Barzulla is being taken from local youth to build a Police Martyrs’ building.” He isn’t against honoring police sacrifices but insists, “Such a building can be raised elsewhere.” According to Mr. Parra, with 65% of youth battling unemployment, drugs, and depression, Srinagar desperately needs spaces and stadiums, not less. Joining the cry, JKAP president Syed Altaf Bukhari called this move “deeply concerning.” He explained how the land serves as a playground for youth from many areas like Rawathpora, Barzulla, and Majeed Bagh. The plan to build on this land has caused “disappointment among the local community, particularly the youth.” Bukhari appealed directly to Chief Minister Abdullah: “I appeal to CM Abdullah to intervene to protect the piece of land for the youth’s sports activities. This appeal is made purely in the public interest, rising above any political affiliations or considerations. Matters that concern the well-being of our youth should always be treated as issues of community welfare rather than politics.” He highlighted a serious issue too – young people in Srinagar facing the growing menace of drug abuse. “Providing them with proper facilities for sports and recreation is essential to guiding them toward healthier, more constructive pursuits,” he said. Bukhari expressed trust that the Chief Minister, who also handles the revenue ministry, “will take the necessary steps to ensure that the Rawathpora playground is not only preserved but also developed into a vibrant hub for sporting activities.” So, the big question is: Will the government listen and save this playground that has given so much joy and health to youth? Or will this green field turn into concrete walls? Kashmir’s youth and their leaders are watching closely!
