Jammu Battles Torrents: Schools Closed Again, University Exams Postponed Till Sept 4!

September 2, 2025

Get ready, Jammu! The heavens are about to pour heavy rains again, making authorities extend the school holiday cheer by another day. On Monday, all government and private schools in Jammu got a green signal to stay closed on September 2, keeping our little champs safe and sound. The University of Jammu also joined the party by postponing all exams scheduled until September 4. The local meteorological office issued a dramatic forecast predicting moderate to heavy rainfall in most parts of Jammu division on September 2 and 3. "There is a possibility of heavy to very heavy rainfall over Kathua, Jammu, Udhampur and Reasi and moderate to heavy rainfall over Doda, Samba, Rajouri, Poonch, Ramban, and Kishtwar in Jammu region and Anantnag and Kulgam in south Kashmir mainly towards late night of September 2 or early morning of September 3 till late afternoon," shared a Met office spokesperson. But beware! These rains come with a warning siren. The same spokesperson cautioned about possible cloudbursts, flash floods, landslides, or shooting stones from hillocks in many vulnerable spots. Rising water levels in rivers and streams also pose a serious risk. So, people are urged to "stay away from water bodies and avoid landslide-prone areas". Sadly, Jammu has already suffered a lot. Since August 14, more than 130 people—mostly pilgrims—lost their lives, and over 120 got injured due to cloudbursts, landslides, and flash floods across Kishtwar, Kathua, Reasi, and Ramban districts. The heavy rains on August 26-27 caused flash floods in low-lying areas too, damaging public and private properties. Taking no risks, Naseem Javaid Chowdhary, Director School Education, Jammu, ordered: "In view of the weather alerts and incessant rainfall causing landslides in hilly areas, and in order to ensure the safety of students and staff, it is hereby ordered that all government and private schools across Jammu division shall continue to remain closed on September 2." He also advised schools to run online classes wherever possible to keep learning going. The University of Jammu echoed the caution. They announced, "all the examinations scheduled to be held on September 2, 3 and 4 are postponed." Fresh dates will come later, giving students some much-needed breathing room. So, Jammu folks, get your umbrellas ready and stay safe! The skies might be dramatic, but safety is the star of the show.
