Big news from the chip world! Arm Holdings, the powerhouse behind the technology inside nearly every smartphone, is stepping into the spotlight with a new mission: building its own complete chips. To make this happen, they've hired Rami Sinno, the Amazon AI chip wizard. Sinno played a key role in creating Amazon's Trainium and Inferentia chips, specially built to power massive AI applications. Until now, Arm only made the blueprints — the core architecture and instruction sets — for chips used by giants like Apple and Nvidia. But why stick to just designing when you can build? In July, Arm revealed plans to invest part of its profit in making actual chips and smaller, specialized chiplets stitched together like magic. CEO Rene Haas hinted at this bold new journey from designs to full-fledged systems. Arm, largely owned by SoftBank Group, traditionally earns money from royalties when their designs are used in chips sold worldwide. Their tech powers almost all smartphones, and now they also aim to grab a solid place in data centers, competing against big names like AMD and Intel. To gear up for this, Arm hasn't been sitting still. They've already brought onboard Nicolas Dube from HPE, an expert in large-scale system design, and Steve Halter, a chip engineer from Intel and Qualcomm. Now, with Sinno joining the squad, Arm is beefing up the team with superstar talent from its rivals. Sinno's Amazon work focused on making chips cheaper and faster than Nvidia's graphics processors for AI, making him the perfect fit for Arm's exciting plans. This hire signals Arm’s bold leap from being the chip architect to becoming a full chip creator, aiming to shake up the tech giants and take the AI chip race head-on. Stay tuned as Arm designs a future where the chips aren’t just blueprints but the real deal!
