The Yamuna river in Delhi is showing signs of heavy swelling! On Tuesday morning, August 19, 2025, at 8 am, the water level at the Old Railway Bridge hit 205.79 metres—just a whisker below the 206-metre evacuation line. Just the day before, in the afternoon of August 18, it was already at 205.55 metres, crossing the danger mark of 205.33 metres and climbing steadily. Officials are not taking chances. "The Yamuna water level is rising mostly due to high volumes of water released from the Wazirabad and Hathnikund barrages every hour," said one official from the central flood room. Imagine this: the Hathnikund barrage is letting out a massive 38,361 cusecs of water every hour, while Wazirabad adds a whopping 68,230 cusecs! The Old Railway Bridge acts as a key watchtower for authorities to track the river’s flow and keep an eye on flood threats. For Delhi, the warning mark stands at 204.50 metres, danger mark at 205.33 metres, and evacuation begins at 206 metres. The water released upstream takes about 48 to 50 hours to reach Delhi, but even smaller discharges are now pushing water levels close to the warning mark. This means the city needs to stay alert and ready. Chief Minister Rekha Gupta is expected to visit low-lying areas near the river to see how prepared the city is for potential floods. All agencies have been asked to take swift precautionary steps to handle any flood-like situation. As the Yamuna swells, Delhi residents watch nervously. Will the river cross that dangerous line? Authorities are keeping a hawk’s eye to ensure safety, but everyone must stay alert and ready!
