US Shoots Down Iranian Drone Near Carrier Ahead of Iran-US Talks
February 4, 2026
Early Tuesday, the US military shot down an Iranian Shahed-139 drone near the USS Abraham Lincoln aircraft carrier. The drone "aggressively approached" the ship about 500 miles from Iran's coast. US Central Command said the drone flew forward despite "deescalatory measures." An F-35C fighter jet took it down. Later that day, Iran’s Revolutionary Guard harassed the American-flagged tanker Stena Imperative. Two boats and an Iranian Mohajer drone sped toward the tanker, threatening to seize it. The US destroyer USS McFaul escorted the tanker safely away, supported by defensive air cover. Earlier, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian ordered Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi to "pursue fair and equitable negotiations" with the US, signaling possible peace efforts. This came as the White House confirmed plans for talks in Turkey this week. US envoy Steve Witkoff will meet Iranian officials, with Turkey and Gulf states like Oman, Qatar, and Saudi Arabia involved. White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt said, "President Trump is always wanting to pursue diplomacy first," but added it takes "a willing partner" to succeed. The nuclear issue is central, with Trump warning, "if we can't, probably bad things would happen." The situation remains tense as both sides prepare for talks amid recent clashes.
