Kerala is set to remove about 500 people who have acquired foreign citizenship from its voter list soon. This comes after the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) exercise reached its final stage. Officials found these voter records in 10 districts. Kottayam leads with 178 such cases, including 50 Canadian and 31 UK citizens. Ernakulam and Pathanamthitta follow with 154 and 93 foreign citizenship cases, respectively. Other districts with overseas citizens include Kasaragod (6), Kannur (2), Wayanad (13), Kozhikode (9), Palakkad (42), Thrissur (18), and Alappuzha (43). Some Keralites have citizenships in Germany, Israel, New Zealand, Ireland, Australia, Denmark, Belgium, UAE, Norway, and even Ukraine. Relatives often informed officials about new citizenships to avoid complications. The voter list also wrongly included some Sri Lankans and Nepalese. Officials said they failed to prove Indian citizenship during hearings and will be excluded from the final list. An election official explained, "It is understood that they were enrolled in the previous electoral roll somehow. However, when they were called for hearing as they were not mapped with the SIR base rolls of 2002, they could not produce valid documents proving Indian citizenship. Hence they have been marked to be excluded from the final list." Non-Resident Indians without foreign citizenship remain eligible to vote at their official address. The revision aims to clean the voter list of ineligible voters and ensure fair elections.
