SIT Report Uncovers Adulterated Ghee in Tirumala Laddu, Names TTD Officials
February 4, 2026
The Supreme Court’s Special Investigation Team (SIT) submitted an 11-page report to the Andhra Pradesh government on adulterated ghee in the sacred Tirumala ‘Srivari laddu prasadam’. The report covers serious irregularities, rule violations, and deliberate misconduct between 2019 and 2024. The SIT highlights the role of the Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams (TTD) Purchase Committee. Named are former MLA Chevireddy Bhaskar Reddy, special invitee Bhumana Karunakar Reddy, and senior TTD officials Anil Kumar Singhal, A.V. Dharma Reddy, and O. Balaji.
The SIT recommends strict action against these members for "deliberate omissions and failures" in tender enforcement. It notes violations at every step — from changing tender rules to ghee procurement — raising serious oversight concerns. Tender conditions were changed in 2020 without scientific study, letting unqualified firms supply adulterated ghee from 2020 to 2023.
Eligibility norms were eased. Minimum turnover dropped from ₹250 crore to ₹150 crore. Dairy experience was cut from three years to one year. Daily milk procurement rules were removed and butter extraction requirements reduced. Special invitees influenced the tender and procurement process where multiple breaches happened.
Despite complaints, tests showed two dairies supplied adulterated ghee. But senior officials ignored these findings. Even after FSSAI tightened quality standards in 2021, some dairies were exempted without reason. The SIT calls the relaxed tender conditions "hurried" and "unjustified," compromising laddu quality and hurting devotees’ religious sentiments.
The report concludes repeated lapses and coordination failures allowed adulterated ghee supply. It urges legal and administrative action against those responsible.
