Gas tanker overturns on Mumbai-Pune Expressway; 12-hour traffic jam leaves hundreds stranded
February 4, 2026
Traffic on the Mumbai-Pune Expressway was completely stalled overnight after a gas tanker overturned near the Adoshi tunnel in the Khandala Ghat section, officials said on Wednesday, February 4, 2026. The tanker, carrying propylene gas, flipped around 5 p.m. on Tuesday. The driver allegedly lost control due to high speed on the slope. Following the accident, a leak of highly flammable propylene gas caused panic among motorists. Authorities shut down traffic towards Mumbai as a safety measure. Mumbai-bound vehicles were redirected onto the Pune-bound lane for about 2 km. However, because of the ongoing gas leak, traffic remained slow and congested in both directions for over 12 hours. Hundreds of vehicles remained stationary for hours. Passengers, including women and children, suffered from lack of food, water, and toilet access. A Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation (MSRTC) bus conductor said their bus had been stuck for more than six hours near the accident. Motorists expressed frustration on social media, with some calling the expressway a "literal parking lot." The Maharashtra Highway Traffic Police advised drivers to avoid the Mumbai-Pune Expressway until normal flow is restored. The crash site is on the Mumbai-bound corridor near the Adoshi tunnel in Raigad district. All emergency agencies are working urgently to control the situation and clear the gas leak. The Mumbai-bound carriageway remains closed for safety, causing heavy delays on both carriageways of India’s first 6-lane tolled expressway, which connects Mumbai, Raigad, Navi Mumbai, and Pune over 94.5 km.
