Bengaluru-Chennai Expressway in Tamil Nadu Nears Completion, Except Arakkonam-Kancheepuram Stretch
January 12, 2026
Except for the section from Arakkonam to Kancheepuram, the four-lane greenfield Bengaluru-Chennai expressway project in Tamil Nadu is expected to finish by June or July 2026. The Walajahpet to Arakkonam stretch only needs a rail overbridge to be completed after railway building removal. The 105.75-km Tamil Nadu portion is divided into four parts: Gudipala to Walajahpet (24 km, 23.85 km done); Walajahpet to Arakkonam (24.5 km, 20.35 km done); Arakkonam to Kancheepuram (25.5 km, only 11 km done); and Kancheepuram to Sriperumbudur (31.7 km, 25.25 km done).
The delay from Arakkonam to Kancheepuram is due to the contractor's slow progress. NHAI issued an intention to terminate the contractor, but the company challenged this in court. The High Court has asked NHAI to give the contractor one more chance to explain, yet no work has restarted. A retired NHAI official called the delays unnecessary and said the contractor should not get more time, especially since the Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh sections are nearly complete.
Meanwhile, construction of a ₹122.03-crore trumpet interchange at Sriperumbudur is progressing well. Started in August 2024, the 1.089-km interchange will connect six directions, including routes to Vellore, Kancheepuram, and Chennai. Approximately 25% of the work is done, with 198 out of 221 girders precast by the contractor. The interchange is expected to be ready this year.
