US Push for Greenland Sparks European Military and Financial Countermoves
January 10, 2026
Donald Trump has revived the idea of acquiring Greenland, warning he will do it 'the nice way or the difficult way.' The US earlier considered buying Greenland for $100 million but did not act. This time, Trump signals using military force if necessary, citing tough stances on Venezuela and Iran. US Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt said, "Look at Venezuela. He tried ardently to strike a good deal with Nicolás Maduro... He told him, ‘I will use the United States military if you do not take such a deal and you will not like it.’" Europe has taken note of Trump's "aggressive mode" and is preparing a united response. An EU diplomat told Politico, "We must be ready for a direct confrontation with Trump. He is in an aggressive mode, and we need to be geared up." France and Germany, along with other allies, plan to increase NATO presence near Greenland. French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot said, "We have begun work at the Quai d'Orsay to prepare ourselves to respond and not to respond alone." Germany’s Johann Wadephul is collaborating on plans to deter US aggression and support NATO forces around Greenland. Greenland, once a Danish colony, is debating independence but remains cautious. The US interest exposed economic frustrations on the island. MP Kuno Fencker said, "We have many, many people below the poverty line... our resources are primarily taken out without good profit to Greenland but mostly profit to Danish companies." The EU plans to nearly double its aid to Greenland to €530 million over seven years starting 2028, aiming to keep Greenlanders away from US control. Trump claims the move is strategic, to prevent Russia or China from taking Greenland. He stated, "We're not going to have Russia or China occupy Greenland... we're going to be doing something with Greenland, either the nice way or the more difficult way." Greenland parties reject US control, saying, "We don't want to be Americans, we don't want to be Danish, we want to be Greenlanders." Talks between US Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Danish officials are expected soon to discuss the issue.
