Swiss Bar Fire Kills 40; Owner Detained in Crans-Montana Manslaughter Probe
January 10, 2026
On New Year's Eve, a tragic fire at Le Constellation bar in Crans-Montana killed 40 young people. On Friday, church bells tolled across Switzerland in a national day of mourning for the victims. A memorial service near the bar saw families and survivors gather to remember. "The images we faced were unbearable. A scene worse than a nightmare. Screams ringing out in the icy cold, the smell of burning. It was apocalyptic," said survivor Marie. Swiss prosecutors detained Jacques Moretti, one of the bar's owners and a French national, as a potential flight risk. He and his wife Jessica face investigation for manslaughter, bodily harm, and arson by negligence. Families of victims had demanded action, with rising anger over how safety was handled. Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, speaking from Rome, said, "This was no accident. It was the result of too many people who did not do their jobs." She questioned why music was not stopped, why no one ordered an evacuation, and why safety checks were ignored. Investigations revealed the emergency doors were blocked, and the fire started from a sparkler touching soundproof foam, which was not safety tested. Local authorities admitted they had not carried out mandatory safety inspections of the bar for five years without explanation. Italy’s ambassador to Switzerland, Gian Lorenzo Cornado, spoke of "a hell inside that bar" with over 1,000 degrees temperature and listed safety violations. The regional hospital in Sion cared for many injured, some still in critical condition. Hospital director Eric Bonvin noted the emotional toll on staff and patients. Survivors now face a long recovery, including those with severe burns. In Crans-Montana, people continue to leave flowers and pay silent respects before the bar ruins. The tragedy has deeply shaken the community and raised urgent calls for justice and accountability.
