FIR Against Punjab Congress MLAs for Sharing AAP’s Atishi Video on Sikh Guru Remarks
January 10, 2026
On January 9, 2026, Punjab Congress announced that an FIR was filed against its MLAs Sukhpal Khaira and Pargat Singh. The FIR was for sharing a video clip of AAP leader Atishi. BJP accused Atishi of making derogatory remarks against the ninth Sikh Guru, Tegh Bahadur. Partap Singh Bajwa, Leader of Opposition in Punjab Assembly, called the FIR a "blatant abuse of State power" and a "shameful attempt to divert attention from a serious issue." He said, "AAP Punjab leadership has chosen the cowardly path of intimidation and political vendetta. Under Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann, the Punjab Police is being misused to harass the opposition lawmakers rather than being deployed to restore law and order in the state." He added, "Let it be made absolutely clear: intimidation will not break our resolve." The Jalandhar Police Commissionerate filed the FIR after a complaint by Iqbal Singh about the uploading and circulating of an "edited" and "doctored" video of Atishi from the Delhi Assembly. Delhi BJP leaders, including Law Minister Kapil Mishra, used the clip to allege that Atishi insulted Guru Tegh Bahadur during a debate on a programme for the Guru's 350th martyrdom day. Jalandhar Police said, "Several social media posts containing a short video clip showing Ms. Atishi allegedly making derogatory and blasphemous remarks against [Sikh] Gurus with highly inflammatory captions have been uploaded." The clip was taken from a social media post by Delhi BJP Minister Kapil Mishra and sent for forensic examination. Sukhpal Khaira called the FIR an "extreme political vendetta" by Bhagwant Mann's government, targeting opposition leaders with "political terrorism." He said, "The political terrorism of Arvind Kejriwal and the Aam Aadmi Party stands badly exposed as the speaker of Delhi Vidhan Sabha has issued a privilege notice to Jalandhar police commissioner for registering the FIR on the property (video) of Delhi Vidhan Sabha proceedings." The Delhi Assembly Speaker Vijender Gupta said, "This [the FIR and use of the clip] amounts to a breach of privilege, and strict action will be taken against the Jalandhar Police Commissioner, because the video clip is a property of the Delhi Assembly." Atishi accused the BJP of using petty politics by dragging the ninth Sikh Guru's name. She said the BJP added false subtitles and inserted the Guru's name in the clip. Atishi also stated she comes from a family with Sikh heritage and declared, "I would rather die than insult the Guru Sahib."
