Kavali Nikitha, a 21-year-old third-year MBBS student at Government Medical College Nagarkurnool, has become one of Telangana’s youngest elected sarpanches. She won the Sarpanch election in Shakhpur village, Pebbair mandal, Wanaparthy district, as an Indian National Congress candidate. The seat was reserved for a Backward Class A woman. Being the only eligible woman in her family, and with parents in government jobs, she stepped into politics to serve her village. The election was hotly contested with five candidates, but Nikitha won by 548 votes. She said, "I did not imagine that people would trust me so much," and credited much of her support to women voters. As sarpanch, Nikitha plans to tackle major village issues. She pointed out, "One of the most pressing issues is the lack of public transport connectivity. Shakhpur currently does not have a regular RTC bus service." She also highlighted the problem of irregular water supply due to poor pipeline infrastructure. "Water supply is another major concern," she added. Sanitation is a challenge too, especially with no proper underground drainage causing problems during the monsoon. Nikitha promised to focus on improving these facilities. She said, "People trusted me and voted for me. I want to repay that trust through my work." Using her medical background, she wants to raise awareness about preventable diseases and hold health screening camps in the village. Nikitha’s win adds fresh energy to grassroots politics in Telangana as she takes on the role of sarpanch with dedication and a clear action plan.
