The West Bengal government took swift action after chaos rocked the Lionel Messi event at Salt Lake Stadium. On December 16, 2025, they issued show-cause notices to DGP Rajeev Kumar and Bidhannagar Police Commissioner Mukesh Kumar. Both were asked to explain their roles in the mishandling of the event within 24 hours, according to Chief Secretary Manoj Pant. Additionally, Bidhannagar Deputy Commissioner of Police Aneesh Sarkar was suspended for negligence during the event. The Youth Affairs and Sports Department's Principal Secretary Rajesh Kumar Sinha also received a show-cause notice. Salt Lake Stadium CEO Deb Kumar Nandan’s services were withdrawn immediately. A three-member probe panel, led by retired Justice Ashim Kumar Roy, recommended these actions. A Special Investigation Team with four senior IPS officers—Piyush Pandey, Javed Shamim, Supratim Sarkar, and Muralidhar—has been formed to look into the incident. The event was cut short after large-scale chaos and vandalism broke out, forcing Lionel Messi to leave early. The damage at the stadium is estimated at nearly ₹2 crore.
