Karnataka fines two Bengaluru schools for violating Kannada teaching law
December 16, 2025
The Karnataka government has taken action against two Bengaluru schools for not following the Kannada Language Learning Act, 2015. Minister for School Education Madhu Bangarappa said officials served notices and imposed penalties on The Bengaluru International School at Dommasandra and Gear Innovative School at Dodda Kannahalli. The Act requires all private schools to teach Kannada as either the first or second language. Schools must confirm compliance when renewing recognition. BJP Council member N. Ravi Kumar questioned why only two schools faced action, noting many CBSE and ICSE schools barely teach Kannada. The Minister responded, "Officials did act whenever they received a complaint about schools violating the rules." The law has been mandatory in Karnataka since 2017.
