Kuwait Busts 15 in Rigged ‘Ya Hala Draws’ Scandal During Shopping Festival
December 9, 2025
Kuwait has arrested 15 people accused of rigging the Ya Hala Draws, a key part of the Kuwait Shopping Festival. The officials involved face serious charges like bribery, forgery, money laundering, and embezzlement. The Criminal Court, led by Judge Nasser Al-Badr, issued arrest warrants and ordered the suspects to be held in Central Jail as investigations continue.
Authorities discovered that prizes were unfairly given to selected winners in exchange for money. An expatriate woman was caught at Kuwait International Airport trying to leave after allegedly winning several vehicles through the scam.
Investigators from the Ministry of Commerce and criminal detectives revealed a complex network manipulating many draws over time. The Public Prosecution kept details secret to protect public trust and ensure the probe was effective.
The case is one of the largest of its kind in Kuwait and exposes weaknesses in controlling commercial draws. Experts say tougher rules may follow to stop similar frauds.
Kuwait’s shopping community now watches closely as the trial prepares to begin. This case highlights the urgent need for transparency and honesty in public prize events.
