The public campaign for Kozhikode's local body polls ended sharply at 6 p.m. on Tuesday with major political fronts putting in all effort to woo voters. The Left Democratic Front (LDF), United Democratic Front (UDF), and National Democratic Alliance (NDA) held 'Kottikkalasham' or final events in a decentralized style, with processions, rallies, dance, and fireworks lighting up wards and divisions. The atmosphere was joyful but intense. Police had to intervene to calm down a faceoff between LDF and UDF activists at Vellikkulangara in Onchiyam grama panchayat. No major incidents were reported elsewhere. Now, candidates and their supporters will maintain silence for the next 24 hours to gear up for voting on December 11. The weeks-long campaign saw star leaders join rallies. LDF was led by Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, while UDF featured Opposition Leader V.D. Satheesan and IUML chiefs Panakkad Syed Sadikali Shihab Thangal and P.K. Kunhalikutty. NDA counted BJP State president Rajeev Chandrasekhar among its key campaigners. Campaigning started quietly with social media and personal visits. Loud announcements and rallies took over during the final week. Parties especially targeted new voters with numerous promises. Key issues included LDF's highlighting of the Jamaat-e-Islami Hind-backed Welfare Party's tie-up with UDF, which Mr. Vijayan clarified in a press meet. LDF also touted government progress and raised allegations against Palakkad MLA Rahul Mamkootathil. UDF focused on the Sabarimala gold theft case and anti-government mood. Congress faced hurdles despite fewer rebels: their mayoral candidate V.M. Vinu was missing from the voters' list.
