Rajasthan Plans Yamuna Water Diversion to Beat Thar Desert's Dry Spell with New DPR
November 28, 2025
The BJP government in Rajasthan is cooking up a grand plan to tame the wild Yamuna floods and bring precious water to thirsty land! A detailed project report (DPR) is being prepared to build a smart transport system that will catch some of the overflowing waters from the Yamuna river during the monsoon season and channel it into Rajasthan.
Water Resources Minister Suresh Singh Rawat shared the exciting news at the ninth Upper Yamuna Review Committee meeting held in Noida on Thursday, November 27, 2025. He said, "The work orders for the DPR had been issued and it was being prepared in coordination with a joint task force comprising members from Rajasthan and Haryana." This new system aims to stop wasting floodwater and instead secure water for many districts in the future.
Union Jal Shakti Minister C.R. Patil led the meeting, which saw participation from ministers and officials of Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh, and Delhi. This shows how big and important the plan is!
Why the rush? Rajasthan signed an agreement with Haryana in February 2024 to get its full share of Yamuna water: 1.119 billion cusec meters, based on the 1994 water-sharing pact. This golden water will help solve the pressing water shortage in four major districts of the Shekhawati region – Sikar, Churu, Jhunjhunu, and parts of Nagaur. These areas, sitting near the harsh Thar desert, have battled water scarcity for years.
Minister Rawat said, "The Shekhawati region, situated at the edge of Thar desert, had been facing water scarcity since long, and the joint task force was preparing an action plan to supply the Yamuna waters to the remote areas in Sikar, Churu, Jhunjhunu, and parts of Nagaur district."
On top of that, he appealed to the Centre to treat big projects on the Yamuna and its tributaries—the Renukaji, Lakhwar, and Kishau projects in Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand—as national projects. "These are key for diverting water from Hathini Kund Barrage to Rajasthan," Rawat emphasized, urging the central government for financial help. The Rajasthan government is already pitching in its share of funds to speed up these projects' finish line.
This ambitious plan promises to turn the tide of water scarcity into a wave of opportunity for Rajasthan's parched lands. Will the Yamuna's monsoon fury finally bring a splash of hope to the desert? Only time will tell!
