NEW DELHI: IndiGo's dream run hit a speed bump in the July-September quarter, as a weaker rupee led the airline to report a staggering loss of Rs 2,582 crore! This loss is much bigger than the Rs 987 crore loss in the same quarter last year. Remember, IndiGo was flying high with a Rs 2,176 crore profit in the first quarter of this fiscal year. The airline's stock took a small hit too, closing at Rs 5,637.3 on BSE, down 1.02% on a day when the market dropped just 0.6%. Surprisingly, despite these challenges, IndiGo's total revenue hit Rs 19,599.5 crore, showing 10% growth compared to the same period last year. Isn't that a silver lining? CEO Pieter Elbers explained, “Our optimised capacity deployment has enabled us to deliver a 10% growth in topline revenue and excluding impact of currency movement, an operational profit of Rs 104 crore as compared to an operational loss last year.” He added, “As India’s aviation sector continues to grow and mature, we recognise the importance of structurally optimising capacity during seasonally weaker periods to sustain profitability.” Elbers painted a picture of cautious optimism: “The year began with significant external challenges across the industry, but we saw stabilisation in July and a strong recovery through August and Sept. Looking ahead, we have scaled up our operational plans for the second half to meet demand and continue driving growth. With that we have nudged up our capacity guidance for full financial year 2026 to early teens growth.” IndiGo’s financial health shows heavy cash reserves with Rs 53,515.2 crore in hand as of September 1, 2025. At the same time, it carries a large capitalised operating lease liability of Rs 49,651.4 crore and total debt of Rs 74,813.8 crore. By September end, the airline was proud of its massive fleet of 417 aircraft, commanding a peak of 2,244 daily flights during the quarter, including non-scheduled flights. In short, despite fierce currency headwinds, IndiGo keeps its engines running and eyes growth skies ahead!
