November 4, 2025
Sky-watchers, get set for a dazzling show! On Wednesday night, November 5, 2025, the Moon will turn up its glow and grow just a bit bigger — it’s the year’s closest supermoon! But what is a supermoon? It happens when a full moon meets the closest spot in its oval path around Earth, called the perigee. This makes the Moon appear up to 14% bigger and 30% brighter than a normal full moon, says NASA. Though the difference is subtle, it adds a sparkle to the night sky that’s hard to resist. Why does the Moon look bigger now? The Moon doesn’t travel in a perfect circle around Earth but in an oval shape. Sometimes it swings closer to us, and if that matches a full moon night, we get the supermoon magic. NASA highlights that this November 5 supermoon is the closest one out of the three this year. The Moon will pass just under 222,000 miles (357,000 kilometers) from Earth — a tad less than its usual distance, making it a star performer in the night sky. When should you watch? Right after sunset, the Moon will be full and bright, lighting up the night with extra shine. Look to the eastern horizon where the Moon rises for the best view in the U.S. For a perfect glimpse, find a dark spot away from city lights — a park, field, or hilltop will do. Will the Moon’s hug on our oceans change? Yes, a tiny bit! Astronomer Lawrence Wasserman explains, “Tides may be slightly higher during a supermoon because the moon is closer to Earth… But the difference isn't very noticeable.” So, no worries, just a small nudge in ocean waves. Don’t worry about fancy gadgets — no telescope or binoculars needed! You can enjoy this lunar beauty simply by looking up. Shannon Schmoll, director of Abrams Planetarium, says, “The difference is most obvious as a comparison between other images or observations.” This supermoon is the sparkling middle child, flanked by another in October and one more in December, making 2025 a fantastic year for moon lovers. So, weather permitting, on November 5, 2025, gaze upward and catch the Moon at its biggest, brightest, and freshest spotlight of the year. Ready to be mesmerized?
