Satellite Images Reveal Grim Signs of Mass Killings in Sudan’s El-Fasher After Rapid Support Forces Takeover

Big trouble in Sudan’s El-Fasher! The city fell to the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) after an 18-month fight. Now, new satellite images from Yale University’s Humanitarian Research Lab paint a chilling picture: mass killings are likely still happening there. Since the RSF took over, reports flood in about summary killings, sexual violence, attacks on aid workers, looting, and kidnappings. Communication is mostly cut, making things even scarier. Yale’s researchers spotted at least 31 spots where human bodies could be lying across El-Fasher—from neighborhoods to university grounds and military sites. The lab said, "Indicators that mass killing is continuing are clearly visible." Survivors who escaped told heartbreaking stories to AFP. One mother, Hayat, shared how young men traveling with them were stopped by paramilitaries and vanished without a trace. The United Nations said more than 65,000 people fled El-Fasher, once home to about 260,000. But tens of thousands still remain trapped amid the chaos. The RSF claims it arrested fighters accused of abuses, but UN humanitarian chief Tom Fletcher doubts their promises, saying their commitment to investigating is questionable. Both the RSF and Sudan’s regular army have a trail of war crimes accusations hanging over them during this bitter conflict. With the RSF now controlling all five state capitals in Darfur, Sudan feels split down the middle—the RSF holds the west while the army controls the north, east, and central parts. What happens next in this deadly tug-of-war remains uncertain, but the people of El-Fasher need urgent help.
