Houston woke up to a shocking scene on Saturday morning as strong thunderstorms rampaged through the city. CenterPoint Energy, the main power company, reported a massive blackout, leaving 157,181 customers without electricity by 5:40 a.m. The storm packed such a punch that power lines couldn’t stand the heat, snapping all over Harris, Waller, and Montgomery counties. Storm Chaos and Tornado Threats The weather wasn’t done testing Houston’s nerves. Tornado warnings were issued for several counties including Waller, Harris, Montgomery, and many more, making the early morning even more tense. The National Weather Service confirmed the threats could last until 7 a.m., endangering both lives and property across a wide region. The Power Company in Action CenterPoint Energy wasn’t caught sleeping. The day before the storm hit, they reshuffled their resources to tackle any coming trouble. A battalion of 1,300 frontline workers and contractors was dispatched across 12 key locations in the Houston area, ready to battle the outage chaos head-on. Voices from the Dark Social media lit up with frustrated residents. One user wrote, “Jeeze, 9-10 hours of possible outage for a storm that lasted 30ish minutes... this is getting ridiculous.” Another snapped at the company, "We get a thunderstorm and @CenterPoint_TX goes down. Every. Single. Time." Complaints about lack of advance notice on planned outages also flooded in, as users demanded better communication. More Power Issues Nearby Adding fuel to the fire, Entergy, another power provider, reported 20,670 customers still powerless as of 5:30 a.m., deepening the blackout woes in Houston and surrounding areas.
