A horrifying fire tore through a private bus carrying 57 passengers from Jaisalmer to Jodhpur on Tuesday, leaving 20 people dead and 16 badly injured. The tragedy struck just ten minutes after the bus left Jaisalmer around 3 pm, when smoke began billowing from its rear on the Jaisalmer-Jodhpur highway. The driver quickly stopped the vehicle, but flames spread like wildfire, engulfing the bus in moments. Shocking scenes unfolded as locals and passers-by jumped into action, pulling out survivors and battling the blaze until help arrived. Army troops joined the rescue operation, while fire tenders and police rushed to the scene. The injured were taken to Jawahar Hospital in Jaisalmer; due to the severity of their conditions, sixteen patients were shifted to a hospital in Jodhpur. Police suspect a short circuit as the fire’s starting point. BJP MLA from Pokran, Pratap Puri, confirmed the grim death toll: “19 passengers died in the bus and one succumbed to burn injuries on the way to Jodhpur.” Following the disaster, district authorities urgently called for family members of the victims to come forward. Officials announced that DNA matching will confirm the identities before releasing the bodies to the kin. Chief Minister Bhajanlal Sharma rushed to Jaisalmer upon hearing the news and received detailed briefings from officers. The district administration wasted no time, launching relief and rescue efforts immediately. District Collector Pratap Singh prioritized swift medical care and introduced helpline numbers to assist affected families. Voices of sorrow echoed from many corners. Governor Haribhau Bagade, former Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot, BJP state president Madan Rathore, and other leaders expressed their grief. Sharma tweeted, “The incident of a bus catching fire in Jaisalmer is extremely heart-wrenching. I express deep condolences to those affected by this tragic accident. Directions have been given to concerned officials for the proper treatment of the injured and to extend every possible help to the victims.” Ashok Gehlot called the loss of 20 lives “unfortunate,” highlighting the deep pain this disaster has caused. This fiery tragedy on the highway is a harsh reminder of how suddenly life can change. The community and officials are standing strong, providing help and seeking answers as investigations continue.
