Amazon Pay, the digital wallet arm of the e-commerce titan Amazon, has shown some interesting financial moves in the fiscal year 2025. The Bengaluru-based fintech firm reported a 9% fall in its standalone revenue from operations, sliding down to Rs 2,096 crore from the previous year. But here’s the twist – the losses also shrank slightly, down to Rs 865 crore from Rs 911 crore. Total expenses dipped too, coming down to Rs 3,060 crore this year from Rs 3,280 crore the year before. Even employee benefits costs took a tiny dip, now standing at Rs 213 crore compared to Rs 216 crore before. In a bold move, Amazon pumped in Rs 350 crore fresh funds into Amazon Pay in April 2024. This clearly signals the company’s hot plans to spread its wings wider in India’s fast-growing digital payments arena. Amazon Pay is battling it out with the big players like Google Pay and PhonePe, which currently dominate the market. But Amazon is not just stopping at simple payments – it operates in a mix of services including bill payments, Unified Payments Interface (UPI) transactions, wealth management, booking tickets, and paying insurance premiums. August numbers were impressive too! The payment firm completed a whopping 98 million UPI transactions and settled close to Rs 10,830 crore. Partner power is also part of Amazon Pay’s success formula. The company has teamed up with top players like BookMyShow, MakeMyTrip, RedBus, IRCTC, and Kuvera to offer customers movie and travel tickets, plus smart wealth management options. On the regulatory front, Amazon Pay scored a big win. In February 2024, it received a payment aggregator (PA) license from the Reserve Bank of India (RBI). This came after an earlier nod for a prepaid payment instrument (PPI) wallet license. These licenses open doors for Amazon Pay to expand and compete even stronger in India's booming fintech market. With this spicy mix of funding, licenses, and partnerships, Amazon Pay is gearing up to take the digital payment game in India to the next level. Will it beat the giants and win more hearts? Time will tell!
