Winnipeg Jets' young star Cole Perfetti suffered an ankle sprain just before the start of the 2025-26 NHL season. This 23-year-old forward is now listed as week-to-week, making his appearance in the opening game uncertain and leaving Jets fans biting their nails. The injury happened during a preseason clash last Friday against the Calgary Flames. Perfetti landed awkwardly in the second period after hitting defenseman Kevin Bahl and couldn’t return to the ice. This sudden absence led to the Jets skipping their Sunday practice, raising alarm bells. Coach Scott Arniel confirmed the injury update on Sunday saying, "Perfetti is injured and will be on a week-to-week status while the team continues to assess his condition." Adding to the news, NHL insider Elliotte Friedman mentioned that Perfetti would "miss some time," with the Jets bracing to start the season without him. This news is a tough punch for Winnipeg because Cole Perfetti was coming off a breakout season. Last year, he scored a career-high 18 goals and dished out 32 assists, totaling 50 points. Drafted tenth in 2020, he has become one of the team’s most skillful and sharp forwards, dazzling fans with his smart play and smooth moves. Before joining the NHL, Perfetti showed his magic in the OHL with the Saginaw Spirit, scoring 111 points in the 2019-20 season. He has played 222 NHL games so far, with a total of 125 points. Last year, his performance helped the Jets claim their first-ever Central Division title and the Presidents' Trophy, finishing with 116 points. Perfetti also shone on the international stage, representing Team Canada in the 2021 World Junior Championship where he displayed his amazing offensive skills. Coach Arniel’s update brings both concern and hope. While the timeline for Perfetti's return is unclear, there is optimism that he could make a comeback by midseason. If he recovers well, his fiery presence will once again power the Jets toward a strong NHL season. Winnipeg fans are keeping their fingers crossed for a swift recovery of their gifted youngster!
