Delhi’s Football Legend NK Bhatia Passes Away After Long Illness

October 5, 2025

Delhi bade farewell to one of its biggest football lovers and leaders, NK Bhatia, who passed away on Saturday after battling age-related health problems. Bhatia, who was the vice-president of Football Delhi, had been admitted to the ICU of a city hospital as his condition worsened. For decades, NK Bhatia was a powerhouse in Delhi’s football scene. Since the 1970s, he held many important roles including secretary and treasurer of the Delhi Soccer Association (DSA) and Football Delhi. He also played a key role at the national level by being part of the All India Football Federation (AIFF) committees. Under his watchful eyes and hard work, Delhi hosted several national and international football tournaments smoothly. Bhatia was famous for his punctuality and dedication. He never missed a chance to personally deliver match details to journalists, even visiting print media offices himself to hand over reports. His kindness and friendliness made him beloved not just by football players and officials, but also by media friends. Shaji Prabhakaran, former AIFF secretary general, remembered him warmly: "During my tenure as president of Football Delhi, he was a pillar of support, offering his best guidance on every aspect. It was an honour to work alongside him." Prabhakaran added, "He was a kind-hearted man who always loved to host his friends and football colleagues, whether at his home or at the stadium." Bhatia’s passing leaves a huge gap in Delhi football. "Mr Bhatia will be deeply missed. His departure leaves a significant void in Delhi football. My thoughts and prayers are with his family and loved ones, wishing them peace and strength during this difficult time," said Prabhakaran. Delhi football has lost a true friend and leader. His passion and personal touch will be remembered by all, as the city mourns the loss of this football giant.
