New York buzzed with a powerful talk as India’s Permanent Representative to the UN, Ambassador Parvathaneni Harish, hosted a special discussion on the International Day of Non-Violence. Dignitaries from countries like Germany and South Africa joined in the lively event, focusing on how Gandhian ideals can light the path to world peace. Ambassador Harish, in a popular post on X, said, “The International Day of Non-Violence declared by the @UN on this day stands both as a national homage by Indians to Bapuji and a global call to action for all. Mahatma Gandhi's message is not confined to India, or indeed to the past, but continues to light the way to the future towards a world where peace triumphs over conflict, dialogue over division, and compassion over fear.” He reminded everyone that October 2 is celebrated in India as Gandhi Jayanti, marking the birth of the Father of the Nation. The UN also honors this day globally to salute Gandhi’s firm belief in non-violence, the heart of India's freedom fight. This remarkable double tribute makes the day extra special with a message for all humanity. The ambassador emphasized that peace is not just about stopping fights but also about easing human suffering. He pointed out, “Sustainable peace is only possible when we address the issue of alleviating human suffering, with poverty being one of the greatest global challenges in this regard.” Inspired by Gandhiji’s vision, India has taken a giant leap in reducing poverty. In the last 10 years, India has helped around 250 million people climb out of multidimensional poverty. This thrilling pace means India is on track to cut this poverty in half well before 2030! Wrapping up, Ambassador Harish delivered a powerful message amid today’s world of divisions and conflicts. He said, “non-violence is the greatest force at the disposal of mankind to achieve sustainable global peace.” The world must embrace Gandhi’s dedication to truth, his dream to lift up all people equally, and his belief that real progress blooms from peace and truth.
