Dhruv Jurel's Special Army Salute After Maiden Test Century Lights Up India vs West Indies Match

October 5, 2025

Ahmedabad witnessed a sparkling moment when Dhruv Jurel, India’s young wicketkeeper-batter, scored his maiden Test century on day two against West Indies at the Narendra Modi Stadium. What made it extra special? As soon as he flicked a shot past mid-wicket, Jurel lifted his bat and performed a crisp army march drill! This vibrant salute was a touching tribute to his father Nem Chand, a retired army havildar who fought in the fierce Kargil War of 1999. Jurel explained, “The salute after my 50 was for my father, but for the hundred, it was something that I had in my mind for a very long time because I have been so close to the Indian Army. I’ve seen my father since my childhood.” His respect for the soldiers runs deep. He told reporters, “What we do on the ground and what they do on the battlefield is very difficult and you cannot compare that. I will always have my respect and whatever I will do in the future will be for them. I would like to dedicate this to the Indian Army for what they do.” Before this century moment, Jurel mostly waited on the bench, as Rishabh Pant usually keeps wickets for India. How did he deal with the long wait? Jurel said, “I consider it to be a massive privilege to be involved with the Indian team whether I am playing in the XI or not. How many people get that chance? How many people get to play Test cricket?” The young player is a true believer in hard work and mental preparation. Even when off-field, he imagines facing different bowlers and mentally prepares himself. “I keep imagining what I would do against so and so bowler, so that when I actually get a chance, I feel that I am ready and well prepared,” he shared. Jurel also revealed a secret to his calmness — guidance from English cricket legend Joe Root. They were teammates at Rajasthan Royals in the 2023 IPL. He said, “Whenever I feel there is something that I need to chat about, I go to him as to what I can do with my batting and he gives simple answers as to how I can play and tackle situations. He told me as a batter it is difficult to remain consistent, but if you keep doing the same things every day and stay disciplined, you will get the results.” Jurel’s century and special salute created a heartwarming moment for cricket fans and army supporters alike. A perfect blend of sports and patriotism, shining bright at the Narendra Modi Stadium!
