GUWAHATI: The nation is in shock as Assam’s cultural superstar Zubeen Garg, aged 52, died tragically in Singapore. He drowned while swimming during a yacht trip, just before his scheduled performance at the North East India Festival. The festival was organized by Shyamkanu Mahanta, and Garg was supposed to light up the event the very next day. To get to the bottom of this sad event, the Union government has activated an important agreement with Singapore. This is called the Mutual Legal Assistance Treaty (MLAT), signed by India and Singapore in 2005. What’s so special about MLAT? It allows both countries to work together by sharing evidence, documents, and investigative help in criminal cases. On Monday, the Assam government requested the Union Home Ministry to use this treaty to dig deeper into the case. Following this, the ministry "invoked the treaty in connection with the FIR lodged by Assam police," announced Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Tuesday via X (formerly Twitter). This swift move shows how serious the authorities are about finding answers to Zubeen Garg’s unexpected death. Meanwhile, fans and friends, including noted personalities like actor Adil Hussain, singers Vishal Mishra, and Armaan Malik, have expressed their shock and grief. Zubeen Garg’s 13th-day mourning ritual is set to take place on Wednesday in Jorhat, his hometown. The Assamese community and music lovers across the country are paying their respects to the legend who touched many hearts with his songs. As the investigation unfolds with help from Singapore, everyone hopes to understand what exactly happened on that fateful yacht trip.
