New Delhi: A dreadful accident shook Chennai when a steel arch fell at the Ennore Thermal Power construction site in Tamil Nadu on Tuesday, claiming the lives of nine workers and injuring many others. The workers, mostly from Assam and nearby areas, were caught in this tragic collapse that has left families devastated and the state in shock. Prime Minister Narendra Modi quickly voiced his sorrow over this disaster. Through the Prime Minister's Office on X, he said, "Saddened by the mishap due to the collapse of a building in Chennai, Tamil Nadu. My thoughts are with the affected people and their families in this difficult hour. Praying for the speedy recovery of the injured." To help the families, he announced an ex-gratia payment of Rs 2 lakh from the PMNRF for each deceased worker's next of kin and Rs 50,000 for those injured. Dr J Radhakrishnan, Chairman of the Tamil Nadu Generation and Distribution Corporation (TANGEDCO), confirmed the accident details and tragic loss of lives. He stated, "There was an unfortunate incident at the Ennore Thermal Power construction site where a steel arch fell and nine people died. These people were from Assam and the surrounding areas. One person is injured. BHEL officials are present at the spot." Police officials from Avadi Police Commissionerate shared, "More than 10 others were seriously hurt in the collapse incident. The victims have been rushed to Stanley Government Hospital in North Chennai. The exact cause of the accident is yet to be determined. Rescue operations are ongoing, and authorities have launched an investigation into the incident." The injured are receiving treatment at Stanley Government Hospital, and the BHEL officials are actively involved at the site to aid rescue and assess the situation. While the cause of the mishap remains unclear, investigations are underway to pinpoint what went wrong. This tragic event is a strong reminder of the risks workers face in big construction projects.
