What a dramatic turn! On Monday, September 29, 2025, Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam’s (TVK) Karur West district secretary V.P. Mathiyazhagan was picked up by Karur Police close to the Karur–Dindigul border. Why? For questioning in connection with a tragic stampede that happened at a rally led by TVK’s charismatic party president and famous actor Vijay. This horrific stampede took 41 precious lives and shook the political world. The police have named Mathiyazhagan as accused number one in their First Information Report (FIR) dated September 27. The FIR was registered by Karur Town police. What charges hang over Mathiyazhagan? The police slapped sections 109 (abetment), 110 (abetment of offense by one person), 125(b) (neglect to prevent offense), and 223 (disobedience to order lawfully promulgated by public servant) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). Besides, Section 3 of the Tamil Nadu Property (Prevention of Damage and Loss) Act was also included. These relate to alleged rule-breaking during the rally at Velusamypuram.
