In a dramatic twist, China's former Minister of Agriculture and Rural Affairs, Tang Renjian, has been sentenced to death, but with a two-year reprieve! Yes, you heard it right. Tang was found guilty of accepting huge bribes amounting to a jaw-dropping USD 38 million. This verdict came from the Intermediate People's Court of Changchun, located in northeast China's Jilin Province. Tang wasn’t just any official. He was also the former secretary of the Communist Party’s leading group in the agriculture ministry. Now, the court has stripped him of all political rights for life. All of Tang’s personal property will be confiscated, and every penny he made through bribery will be snatched back and sent straight to the national treasury. From 2007 to 2024, Tang used his power both locally and in the central government to help others in shady deals—including business operations, project contracts, and even job transfers. According to the official Xinhua news agency, Tang admitted his guilt and showed remorse during his final statement. The court’s ruling explained, “Tang's offenses inflicted severe damage on the interests of the state and the people,” and that’s why he got the death penalty. But here’s the catch: because he cooperated, confessed, and returned his illegal gains, the court decided to be a bit lenient and put his execution on hold for two years. The case unfolded on July 25 when the court heard evidence, held cross-examinations between prosecutors, Tang, and his defence team. But wait, there’s more context!
