Sikkim faced a heartbreaking disaster when a massive landslide struck the Upper Rimbi area in Gyalshing around midnight on Friday, September 12, 2025. Continuous heavy rains had softened the soil, triggering this deadly event. Among the victims was Rajen Gurung, 47, the respected president of the Sardung Lungjik Gram Panchayat. According to police, the landslide occurred on Saturday evening while Mr. Gurung was near his home, checking the drainage system. Tragically, he was buried alive by the sudden landslip and later died due to his injuries. Chief Minister P.S. Tamang expressed his deep sorrow, saying, "In this moment of profound grief, I extend my heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family and pray for eternal peace to the departed soul. Late Shri Gurung's selfless service to his community and his tireless contributions towards the welfare of the people will be remembered with deep respect and gratitude." The CM further assured that the government and people of Sikkim stand united with the grieving family during this irreparable loss. He also praised the quick response of the district administration and rescue teams, who are providing all necessary support to the affected families and area. As rescue operations continue, the whole state watches and prays for the safety of everyone impacted by this tragic landslide. The loss of a community leader like Rajen Gurung is felt deeply across Sikkim, highlighting the harsh power of nature unleashed by relentless rain.
