New England Patriots Cut Veteran Safety Jabrill Peppers Amid Drama and Legal Battles

August 31, 2025

The New England Patriots are shaking things up! They are set to release veteran safety Jabrill Peppers, despite him signing a juicy three-year, $24 million extension just last summer. This news came from ESPN and has taken fans by surprise. Peppers, 29, was named a team captain and was expected to be a key player. But last season was rough. He played only six games because of injury and another big problem – he was placed on the commissioner's exempt list after being charged with domestic violence. The big relief? In January, Peppers was acquitted of all assault charges. Speaking outside the courthouse in Braintree, Massachusetts, Peppers opened up to reporters. Quoting Reuters, he said, "I had to be quiet for three months. This was all I could think about. This was the first time in my life when football wasn't the most important thing on my mind. I had to just sit through everybody pouring dirt on my name. Everybody, for the most part, is actually thinking that I did these things. But, to me, crimes against children and women are the most egregious things that you could do. And to be accused of that, it just hurt." Before shining in New England, Peppers played for the Cleveland Browns and New York Giants. Over his career, he racked up impressive stats: 511 tackles, seven interceptions, 5.5 sacks, six forced fumbles, and seven fumble recoveries in 99 games, including 85 starts. Drafted 25th overall from Michigan in 2017, Peppers has shown his skill on many fields. So, what’s next for the Patriots' safety lineup? With Peppers leaving, the team now looks to veterans Jaylinn Hawkins, fourth-round rookie Craig Woodson, Kyle Dugger, Dell Pettus, and special team star Brenden Schooler to fill the gap and keep the defense strong. The departure of Peppers is a stirring moment, as the Patriots move on from controversy and plan for a fresh and fearless defensive future.
