Get ready for a hair-raising tale from Pueblo, Colorado! On August 20, 2025, inspectors stumbled upon a terrifying sight behind a secret door in Davis Mortuary – two dozen decomposing bodies, plus containers filled with bones and what could be human tissue. This funeral home is owned by Chris Cotter, co-owner and brother of Pueblo County Coroner Brian Cotter. The Colorado Bureau of Investigation (CBI) launched a full criminal probe, searching the mortuary and even the homes of both Cotter brothers. Neither Brian nor Chris Cotter has been arrested or charged yet, but the investigation is still hot and expected to take a lot of time. Interestingly, the brothers have lawyers and haven’t been questioned yet. Brian Cotter’s lawyer, David Beller, didn’t give any comments, and the lawyer for Chris Cotter remains unknown. What made inspectors suspicious? A strong odor that led to the discovery of the bodies hidden behind a cardboard display. Shockingly, Brian Cotter reportedly asked the inspectors not to enter that hiding spot. Pueblo County Commissioners and even Colorado Governor Jared Polis are demanding Cotter’s resignation to avoid costly recall elections. But, for now, Brian Cotter still holds his post, although coroners from neighbouring counties are running his office. Documents reveal Brian Cotter told inspectors that some bodies were waiting for cremation for about 15 years! And here’s the jaw-dropper – Cotter admitted he might have given fake ashes to families who thought their loved ones had been cremated. Creepy, isn’t it? This scandal exposes a big problem in Colorado – the state has had some of the weakest funeral home oversight in the country. No routine inspections have allowed shocking abuses like this to happen. In a related case not far from Pueblo, almost 200 decaying bodies were found in a building in Penrose, about 50 kilometres away. This creepy, unfolding drama has stirred fear, anger, and deep concern over how our loved ones are treated after death.
