BJP Slams Opposition’s False Claims on Aadhaar & Bihar Voter List Amid SC Verdict

August 26, 2025

NEW DELHI: The political drama heats up in Bihar's voter list debate! BJP fired a sharp response on Sunday, clearing the air about the Supreme Court's verdict on Aadhaar use in voter enrolment. BJP IT head Amit Malviya blasted the opposition for spreading "false propaganda" about voters being wrongly excluded in Bihar's ongoing special intensive revision (SIR) of electoral rolls. Malviya made it crystal clear: "Aadhaar is only proof of identity and residence, and it does not establish citizenship." He stressed that nowhere in the Supreme Court’s order was Aadhaar deemed a valid document for voter enrolment in the SIR process. Taking a strong swipe at the opposition, he said, "Opposition is spreading falsehoods over the issue," and added, "Opposition's claim that the top court has asked 'Aadhaar ID to be treated as a basis for determining citizenship is wrong.'" He warned that "Attributing to Supreme Court what it has not said is contempt of court." Malviya explained how the law works, citing the Representation of the People Act. It states that only Indian citizens can be registered in the voter list. "Aadhaar can never be the basis for determining someone's eligibility," he said, emphasizing that the Aadhaar Act itself says it does not prove citizenship. Poking holes in demands to treat Aadhaar as an automatic voter enrolment document, he pointed out that it would nullify important legal provisions. "In fact, SC, on Aug 12, held that Aadhaar is not a legal document to prove citizenship," he noted. The BJP leader reaffirmed the SIR exercise is on track: "SIR is intact; Aadhaar alone cannot get you enrolled. Dead, fake, Bangladeshi and Rohingya names will be removed, and only Indian citizens will elect the next govt, not foreigners." Digging deep, Malviya claimed that approximately 65 lakh names were removed from the draft voter roll in Bihar because they were fake, deceased, or foreign nationals. He also disclosed that out of these removed names, only 84,305 objections have been filed so far — just 1.3% of total removals, which is very low and "well below the standard margin of error." With this, he asserted the cry of “vote chori” (vote theft) by the opposition is "manufactured" and said the opposition leaders have been "exposed" once again. So, the message is loud and clear: only real Indian citizens will cast votes, and the Supreme Court has not given a free pass for Aadhaar-based voter enrolment. The battle of facts versus falsehood continues on Bihar's political front!
